Pope Tawadros II has cancelled plans for a celebration marking the anniversary of his ascent to leadership in the Coptic Orthodox Church.

The Egyptian prelate indicated that a celebration would be inappropriate due to the difficulties the Coptic Church is undergoing. The Fides news service notes that roughly 100 Christian churches have been attacked by Islamic extremists in the year since Pope Tawadros became the leader of Egypt's largest Christian body.
